I have a question about MPEG decoder performance as it applies to DVD players. Maybe you or David know the answer.

In the reviews I have seen of the $500-800 DVD players, the picture displayed in the fast-forward mode is "jerky" and hard to follow. This makes it difficult to locate a scene using the fast-forward or rewind function. In my opinion, this is a big drawback for these players.

I suspect that the MPEG decoders in these players are screaming near full speed to keep up with the 30 frames/sec rate in play mode, and they can't decode at the higher speeds required by FF and REW. Perhaps they just decode the "P" frames, but I don't know for sure. Do you know if there are any players that have smooth FF and REW functions? If so, do they have a blazing fast decoder that decodes all the I, B, P frames? Or do they implement some type of algorithm that allows them to produce a smooth picture, such as by using the P frames and some of the I frame data?

Finally, do any of the CUBE decoders address this problem? I hope so -- it seems like it would be a big selling point for a DVD player.
Thanks.
