"Now go back to Oleman and ask about Average True Range." I discovered ADX - average directional index - and it works very well for separating trends and chop. Another article - intelligentspeculator.com I believe the September issue of TA of Stocks and Commodities feature some "market wizards" and their views on ADX as well. If you follow this link you can search for the term ADX and it will return a bunch of interesting articles, I think. search.traders.com
