Taiwan semiconductor output loses 2 weeks -Merrill

HONG KONG, Reuters [WS] via NewsEdge Corporation : Semiconductor firms dependent on Taiwan fabrication plants for output could see two weeks' less production as a result of damage from Tuesday's earthquake, Merrill Lynch said in a research report.

Among the U.S. companies Merrill Lynch listed that outsource to Taiwan, Galileo Technology and Altera Corp outsourced to the island the most with 100 percent and an estimated 80 percent respectively.

Broadcom Corp, MMC Networks, PMC Sierra, SanDisk and Xilinx each outsourced 50 percent to Taiwan.

Broadcom and Altera said on Tuesday their third quarter earnings would not be affected by the quake.

But Merrill Lynch said the impact of a production shortfall would show in the fourth quarter, as products to be shipped by ''fabless'' companies (those without domestic fabrication plants) have already been rolled off Taiwan production lines.

Intel Corp, Micron Technology Inc and Texas Instruments Inc outsourced none of its production to Taiwan, Merrill Lynch said.
