Re Backtesting: I backtest each of my primary screens (long and short) every day. I also backtest patterns that seem to be behind "picks" made by others. For example, my screens picked up DROOY on tuesday, but the risk-reward ratio for the screen that picked it showed a .28 vs 8.00 (12mos) for DOW30 stocks. You need to be careful with backtests as well; daily testing of screens shows trends which come about as a result of the overall "market" acting on the picking system. Short vs Long (positions not term) testing of picking systems is a good indicator of market direction.
