I agree that Intel underestimated demand for their processors, however it must be better to be somewhat under capacity than to be over as the memory makers were found to be. This is not to say that the two segments are directly compatible. There is much more competition in the memory segment and memory is more of a commodity.

I worked in the oil industry for many years and those companies had a dismal record of predicting supply and demand. They would only cut back spending on exploration and development AFTER prices had fallen and increase expenditures AFTER prices rose again.

Intel probably does a better job than most in this area.

Another aspect of the perceived AMD/Cyrix threat could be positive in way. Just speculating now, however it might be that all the hype has caused the analysts to look even closer at Intel's fundamentals with positive results, we hope. Cheers.
