Westfort Energy Runs Production Casing on Elaine Hilbun Well
10:00 EST Thursday, September 23, 1999

JACKSON, MS, Sept. 23 /CNW/ - Westfort Energy Ltd., symbol WT - Toronto Stock Exchange announced today that it is running production casing on the Elaine Hilbun No. 1 well.

The No. 1 Elaine Hilbun well drilled in Gillsburg Field, Section 34 T1N R6E Amite County, Mississippi was drilled to a depth of 11,859 ft. Shows were logged and cored in several zones including the prolific Upper Tuscaloosa formation. 5 1/2 inch production casing was run to total depth. Patterson drilling company, Kilgore, Texas, handled the contract for drilling.

A west offset to the indicated producer, the Humble (Exxon) J.L. Williams No. 1, was completed in the Upper Tuscaloosa formation at perforations from 10,946-959 ft. on 4/15/70. It produced approximately 700,000 barrels of 41 degree gravity oil in this formation before developing mechanical problems with casing. Seven other wells in the field produced an average of 300,000 barrels of oil each from the Upper Tuscaloosa formation. The Upper Tuscaloosa formation was first tested successfully by D.A. Biglane in a south offset to the Humble well flowing 532 barrels of oil per day. That well produced 400,000 barrels of oil from the Upper Tuscaloosa.

The Upper Tuscaloosa sand has produced in excess of 3.5 million barrels of oil in the field while the Lower Tuscaloosa formations have produced 3.2 million barrels. Independent engineering studies indicate that there remain 1.6 million barrels of oil to be produced in the Upper Tuscaloosa sand alone.

The announcement of the Elaine Hilbun well is Westfort's fourth announcement in the last thirty days of new well completions.

The Toronto Stock Exchange has neither approved nor disapproved of this release!

On behalf of the company,
