I do not think bitterness is what drives Buchanan, though he is certainly angry. I think he sincerely thinks America needs an effective voice of political sanity, and that that voice cannot possibly exist with any sort of potency within the GOP. To his mind "the fix is in" and will always be "in" where the GOP is concerned. He thinks there simply is no sense in his labouring for a party that rejects his ideals.

Buchanan is a populist, and as such hungers for a vehicle whereby he can effectively promote his agenda. He likely thinks that, politically, the Reform Party offers him much more promise than the GOP. I think he is correct-- at least concerning fiscal matters.

The GOP wants to hear nothing of protectionism, while the Reform Party was built on warnings of "giant sucking sounds" from the south. Buchanan of course knows he cannot win the presidency (he knew that even before launching his GOP bid). But he believes once Americans hear his agenda as often as they hear that of the Democrats/Republicans (he thinks they are effectively a single party), they will eventually jump on his bandwagon. To have this happen, he must first have access both to cash and a significant party infrastructure, a thing he will never have within the GOP.
