The first thing it does is translate everything it runs into Java and then back out. It is generically slower than Microsoft because of this, and can never run as fast.

Hi Lindy:
I don't think that that is exactly true. Programs are *written* in java, so it is not a translation language. It is just like C or C++ (more popular programming languages), with its own syntax and what not. One big difference, I believe, is that a java program is compiled (made into machine language so that a computer can run it) at RUNTIME. So when you execute a java program, it compiles it and then runs it. With C/C++, programs are precompiled, therefore increasing performance.
