Bill,

I find your analysis of Intel's prospects in the next few years fairly naive. While Intel has been superbly managed in the past few years, it's facing, what I think, will be a fairly painful transition to Merced chip after the current Pentium Pro upgrade cycle is over. Merced is a 64-bit chip requiring PC vendors to come up with new hardware architecture for the PC, e.g. faster bus, 64-bit boards, etc. The OS and application migration to 64-bit will be even more painful. Companies that went through it, like DEC and SGI know that it takes a few years to go through this. My guess is that most corporate customers, after going through upgrade to PPro boxes, will wait several years until the 64-bit PC architecture and software stabilizes and the benefits to them become clear-cut.
