Thanks for the link. After reading his statements in full context, it comes to mind, along the lines of Paul's comments, that it is not in MSFT's interests for high-tech & Internet related companies to carry lofty price valuations.

Why? Well, many of these would-be MSFT competitors do not have the cash flow that MSFT enjoys. The only thing right now that these fledgling companies have to offer to attract top talent is stock options. Once public, these companies can grow by only by using their lofty valued stock as collateral to obtaining additional financing, as a medium of exchange to acquire other growing companies that fit well within the corporate strategy.

The foregoing makes it difficult for MSFT to compete. And we all know how well MSFT likes to compete. <ggg> Balmer is no dummy. I am sure the statements he made were calculated in an effort to dampen sentiment for high tech stocks that have recently led the market upward.

Personally, I think MSFT is treading on thin ice by employing this tactic.
