I am only connected to superconductivity as an investor. The slow introduction of s/c into industry has had similar parallels in history. The steamship took several decades from inception to commercialization. This was simply because its introduction caused sail driven ships to be designed better and better.
Nonetheless, the fact remains that s/c is indeed coming of age, across different industries. IMG's failings and those of the likes of ISCO are not caused by s/c being slow in development. They can be attributed more to management violating some basic management and finance principles. Capitalism is very unforgiving when that happens.
I see more astute management in AMSC, and I see some symptoms of the right steps starting to be taken here at IMG. SCON is in a race with time between revenue growth and its ability to raise funds. ISCO is so far down the hole that it needs some miraculous sales growth to pull out.
In short, I don't believe we need to wait for 5-10 more years before the jury is out. Already, the issue of SMES will either prove itself in 99-00 or not. Also I don't think anyone will fund ISCO or SCON any futher if they do not get the major sales growth they need in introducing their filters to the telecoms during the same period.
As for commodity products, IMG has learned the hard way. But out of those products can come some high margin know how that can also sell in 99-00.
Developing sales for motors, transformers and power transmission will need the 5 year horizon you are talking about. But before we look that far there will be some very telling landmarks in the next 18-24 months.
I hope this is of help, but I must stress that that is only a personal opinion that is based on my own analysis. You will need to make your own conclusions.
