NAMPA, Idaho--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 23, 1999--Micron Electronics, Inc. (Nasdaq:MUEI), today announced that it will use VIA's Apollo Pro chipset in its next generation of Millennia desktop consumer PCs, to be announced on September 27. Micron chose the new VIA technology because it found the chipset coupled with standard 133 MHz synchronous dynamic random access (SDRAM) memory delivers virtually the same or better performance as systems equipped with substantially more costly RAMBUS technology. Micron estimates that RAMBUS-equipped PCs will cost between $200-500 more than comparable configurations of its forthcoming Millennia products.
"Micron is focused squarely on providing the industry's best price/performance and value," said Jeff Moeser, vice president of desktop and server product development for Micron. "That is one reason we chose VIA and PC133 memory for our newest high performance consumer/SOHO PCs. We are offering performance similar to the new RAMBUS PCs for a significantly lower price."
Moeser added that Micron will continue designing its Millennia PCs with the VIA chipset as long as the Via technology continues to enable a superior price/performance solution.
