Echostar V launch Successful

One quick comment: the satellite has onboard maneuvering rockets that will be used to locate the satellite at its desired orbit. These rockets are NOT jettisoned. They are used throughout the life of the satellite for station keeping. Without minute regular adjustments, the satellite would be unable to remain stationary (relative to the earth) and facing the CONUS.

Each satellite has an onboard fuel supply. As much as 90% of that supply is used to maneuver the satellite to its orbit and the rest over the life of the bird. For this reason, even a modest savings in the amount of fuel needed to reach its orbital slot can add up to years of additional life. Based on the Lockeed Martin data, Echostar V apparently acheived an favorable positioning and the resulting conservation of onboard fuel is very good news indeed.

GO DISH!
