As a law enforcement officer, I can attest that guns serve as a deterrent to violence as well as a means of defense. I agree that criminal possession and/or use of a firearm is intolerable, but that is one of the reasons you have law enforcement; to remove the criminal from the streets and remove those weapons that are in the hands of criminals. Attempting to penalize every law abiding citizen who owns a firearm because of the acts of others is senseless. We don't ban cars because of the high death rate derived from drunken or drugged vehicle operation. If you look at the statistics, the figures for auto deaths are significantly higher than those attributed to firearms. As a positive side to gun ownership, just look at Florida. While violence has escalated in some areas, attacks on Florida citizens has decreased because of the right to carry laws. The criminal element does not want to chance being faced with an armed citizen. Yet look at the tourists who are easy prey for these criminals..and why..because they are not armed. And, the criminals know it. It's time to stop coddling the criminals. Stop their idiotic "civil rights" lawsuits. Stop the paroles and releases of dangerous felons. If a crime is committed with a firearm, then make the sentence so stiff that it truly is a deterrent. Finally, I am also a recreational shooter. I enjoy marksmanship and high accuracy. I find many others who also do the same. I don't advocate taking away your car, your right to use gasoline, or anything else, although these are truly a danger to yourself and others. I believe in freedom and rights until the INDIVIDUAL shows abuse of those rights and then punitive measures. Not before and not as a class. And, that's my opinion!
