Should social conservatives leave the GOP en mass, nothing would change, and this would prove the point that the enemy already has taken the field. Social Conservatives have no effective role within the GOP where their values are concerned. They merely provide votes for Democrats like Trent Lott.

The basis of a coalition should be the support of some overarching mutually held principle. Should a party within a coalition think itself seriously ill used by remaining a member of a coalition, a separation is perhaps warranted. I think conservatives should not remain in the GOP just because of a perception that it beats being members of the Democrat Party. They should remain in the GOP only because the party clearly champions some overarching principle they themselves embrace. They should not compromise moral principle and remain in the GOP simply because of a fear that becoming Democrats will force them to virtually discard principle. They should leave the party altogether, even if it means in the near term that all they will have is principle.

By their leaving the enemy's camp and establishing a camp of their own, social conservatives will give the country a clear choice (and that means perhaps more than you think). Currently, even with the Reform Party joining the fray, we have the choice of voting either for Democrats or Democrats.
