According to CEUT's "Hotbird"

G* reported at the investors conference that fixed phones were in production now; capacity (initial, I suppose) is said to be 1,000/month.

I think that's probably the Schlumberger "phone booth" fixed phones.

I have the opinion that the real demand for fixed phones can be satisfied faster and cheaper by offering a stripped down fixed antenna like the ones used in maritime applications. The interfaces seem very simple: a dc power supply at one end, any phone at the other; batteries, generators and conventional phones are cheap and plentiful just about anywhere. Better to thee the locals figure out the best source for them. The "pay phone booth" approach with self contained power supply, good in all weather, etc, is stupid, IMHO.
