Why? In a civilized world it is not required. Ergo, to support it, you must
believe that we are not as civilized
as we should or could be. This bothers me.<

It bothers me too. But I think there is a strong ostrich urge to think of our current society as "civilized". Every time there is a burglary or armed robbery - that concept is made a lie.

unfortunately we live in an uncivilized society.
i wish it were different.
but until we americans see WHAT IS instead of what we want life to be, we will be at the mercy of politicans and criminals of lesser means.

Ours is NOT a civilized society ... so we must defend our right to self-defense until the NEED for self-defense becomes a thing of the past. And that won't happen in my lifetime.

but it is not only about self defense, not protection from the government.
those are secondary issues.
teh crux of the debate at hand is Self Determination, ie, free will.
And until the law writers in washington realize we are not slaves, and not distracted, they will continue to treat us as children.
