Ballmer knows exactly what he's saying. Everybody knows that even if Softee doubles to a highly improbable 1 trillion market cap in the next 5 yrs(provided favorable mkt conditions), that still may not be enough to lure the best and brightest to MSFT. In this market, bright (and financially motivated) minds would like to see in five years, their options worth multiply by 10 rather than 2.
He and his boss can easily withstand a severe 30% correction, but the small internet companies may not.
