Applied Materials' Morgan on Taiwan Quake's Impact: Comment

Tokyo, Sept. 24 (Bloomberg) -- James Morgan, chairman of Applied Materials Inc. of the U.S., the world's largest supplier of wafer fabrication systems and services to the global semiconductor industry, had the following comments on the impact of the earthquake in Taiwan.

Applied Materials said new orders from Taiwan in the third quarter reached $379 million -- or 26 percent of the company's total -- rising from $122 million, or 20 percent, in the year- earlier quarter. That made the island Applied Materials' No. 2 buyer in this year's third quarter, exceeding the $233 million from Japan.

''The latest update we have, as of this morning, is that power has been reestablished to the fabrication plants so that they can begin to figure out the extent of any damage to clean rooms.

''There doesn't seem to have been much structural damage to the factories in Hsinchu. Most fabs (fabrication factories) there are constructed according to U.S. specifications, so they should be OK.

''Our facility is fine and in full operation. We have backup teams ready to help people if our customers need it.

''Nobody has a clue yet about any damage to fabrication lines. Our equipment survived an earthquake in Silicon valley of similar magnitude without a lot of problems.

''I was worried about the power situation, but if it's true it's back, we should know more pretty quickly.''
