Venezuelan oil union threatens to strike Source: Tulsa World Venezuela's largest oil workers union, Fedepetrol, said Tuesday it could strike as early as next week over the inclusion of its rival in contract talks with the state oil company. Fedepetrol officials said they will meet Wednesday to discuss a strike date. The threat comes just days after Fedepetrol agreed that its Sintraip rival could take part in contract talks with [Petroleos de Venezuela S]A. "The government isn't going to give any oil union permission to strike," said Ricardo Penfold, an analyst with Asesora Santander. "It would have to be an illegal strike." All strikes must receive permission from the labor ministry. Fedepetrol's ability to muster support for a strike is questionable, especially as it has lost support to its rival Sintraip. A prolonged strike could paralyze Venezuelan oil shipments to the United States.
