Some very good numbers keep coming out of Korea. How many years has it been since Korea started up the network? There seems to be an inflection point where market penetration takes off. Are we still 3 years away from the US inflection point?

SOUTH KOREA'S WIRELESS NUMBERS PASS WIRELINE

Mobile phone subscriptions in South Korea have surpassed wireline usage, with more than 21 million wireless users to the 20.8 million wireline phones, according to the Ministry of Information and Communication.

The country's mobile phone penetration rate of 44.8 percent is sixth in the world after Finland, Norway, Sweden, Hong Kong and Iceland. Ministry officials expect the rate to pass 50 percent before the end of the year.

Korea ranks fifth after the United States, Japan, China and Italy in number of subscribers. The number has risen sharply in the past two years, from 5 million in September 1997 to 10 million nine months later and to 15 million in February this year.

As of Sept. 15, SK Telecom [SKM] had 8.67 million subscribers, followed by Korea Telecom Freetel (3.95 million), Shinsegi TeleCom (3.01 million), LG Telecom (2.89 million) and Hansol PCS (2.48 million).
