Amy, RE: Aren't executives suppose to avoid discussing the price of their company's public stock? Isn't it an industry norm to discuss earnings, not the stock price, during investment meetings rather than random public events? In the old days, this would be true, because a company's stock price really had no effect on day to day operations. Today, and particularly with a company such as MSFT, the price of the common stock has a direct effect on the company. MSFT has to hire workers every day, and for several years, they were able to offer a cash portion of compensation that was lower than the competition because the at the money options that accompanied this cash had great value. Recently (meaning for the last few months) the options haven't had the same magic, and MSFT's labor costs have begun to creep up.
