Thread, re: switching machines in an IP world...

There is a rather extensive and interesting discussion taking place right now on he NANOG List (the North American Network Operators' Group - "The" place where ISP Backbone Providers meet to discuss the topics of the day and assist one another) focusing on, of all things, digital cross connects. The title of the thread is: "DACS Vendor."

DACS, of course, is the trademarked [TM] four-letter acronym coined by ATT (now LU) in the Late Seventies, standing for Digital Access and Cross Connect System. The generic term for this TDM-based time-slot switching technology is Digital Cross-connect System, or DCS.

As I now see IP being mounted on IBM Main Frame partitions (LPARS, or logical partitions)n and individual channel assignments, I wonder if it will follow that each port on a DCS will be assigned its own IP address. Something similar is already taking place on end office switches (Class 5s) for those variants capable of Internet applications such as VoIP and DSL links.

Anyone know if DCS ports are being assigned IP addresses behind the scenes?
