well, consider this:

Steve Balmer's comment yesterday about internet stocks being ridiculously overvalued could be a sign that the euphoria and self-delusion that fuels any speculative boom has run its course. And the run-up on RRRR has been based on that boom -- the very vague idea that RRRR would invest in internet companies as yet unnamed, and in that way make its fortune.

And without vague internet investments, there is... the solid, day-to-day, prestigious-client webdesign business -- very nice, but so far not profitable, and it could dip as the rest of web frenzy dips.

One cheerier thought is that the vast machineries put into place by the web boom will not disappear even in an October crash. In NY and no doubt most other places around the country, DSL is on the way -- really really cheap and really really fast internet speeds. And competing with that will be cable based web service, which is also becoming real. Everyone cruising around at home at T1 speeds should change what websites can do, and maybe that will continue internet excitement.

or maybe it'll be a wrap up your troubles in dreams sort of diversion, like sound movies were in the early 1930's...

g'luck
