I remember a late 1980"s NYT Mag piece on him which basically said that he was a drunk, and in the habit of calling people up at all hours of the night in that condition.

They also recounted his 1988 pledge that that would be his final term. Funny, when he ran again (and again) that was never raised by the media, unlike with AlFonz.
