U.S. Home & Garden Chooses OpenSite for Private Online Auction

SAN FRANCISCO, Sep 22, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- U.S. Home & Garden Inc.
(NASDAQ: USHG) today announced that E*Garden, its lawn and garden
website, will use OpenSite Technologies' Concierge service to power its
private business-to-business online auction.

The auction will open in October to growers, landscapers, garden
centers, manufacturers, and other garden-product businesses at
www.egardenwholesale.com. The site will specifically prohibit consumer
transactions.

With this new auction, USHG can create a unique exchange forum for the
lawn and garden industry, making it easier to sell excess inventory,
introduce new products, broaden their customer base, and create a
community of qualified customers. USHG will work with garden-product
businesses like Germania Seeds, to generate inventory for the auction.
USHG will also provide a non auction business-to-business site to
facilitate transactions in the ordinary course of business.

"Using OpenSite's Concierge service, we can create a sales channel that
simply does not exist for this industry today," said Linda Parks
Watson, president of E*Garden. "Auctions should be especially
attractive for our project-oriented and time-sensitive customers, such
as nurseries, garden centers, and landscape contractors. In addition,
we hope to extend brand awareness for E*Garden, increase our customer
acquisition and retention, obtain additional registration and
purchasing information, and optimize inventory management."

OpenSite's Concierge service is an outsourced auction solution, letting
USHG establish an online auction quickly and cost-effectively. Using
Concierge, USHG will establish a branded, sophisticated, fully
functional auction that integrates seamlessly into the E*Garden
website, which will also offer a fixed-price wholesale goods. OpenSite
will provide setup, site design, software, hosting, and auction
maintenance during the first six months of operations, thereafter
E*Garden intends to have all operation of the auction site brought in
house.

"U.S. Home & Garden is taking a lead in its industry," said Kip Frey,
Opensite president and CEO. "By creating this new business-to-business
auction, the company can greatly expand its business opportunities by
creating and opening new channels of distribution that up to now have
not been available to commercial users, businesses and manufacturers."

U.S. Home & Garden Inc. is a leading manufacturer and marketer of a
broad range of consumer lawn and garden products including weed
preventative landscape fabrics, weed trimmer replacement heads,
