I think the post you just linked to says it all:
Nextel Communications Inc. (NXTL) and other wireless-service companies fell. MCI WorldCom had been looking to buy a wireless- phone company even after talks between it and Nextel failed, analysts said. Nextel fell 4 9/32, or 6.3 percent, to 63 9/16 and traded as low as 61 1/2. Powertel Inc. (PTEL) fell 3 5/8, or 6.6 percent, to 51 1/4 and traded as low as 50 9/16. VoiceStream Wireless Corp. (VSTR) fell 6 11/16, or 9.7 percent, to 62 1/16 and traded as low as 60 3/8. Omnipoint Corp. (OMPT) fell 5 1/16, or 8.1 percent, to 57 1/8 and traded as low as 55.
These are not CDMA carriers and all have been hit hard. I don't think their futures are as bright as those carriers who have invested in CDMA infrastructure. Time will tell. For those interested, I would recommend looking into the capital expenditures that will be required going forward to stay current with data operations and subscriber growth. I would also look at the data (and voice) capacities the various upgrades will handle. I'm not going to hit anyone over the head with a club to make them see what I see, but I am an advocate of the individual investor and think a little investigation by Nextel investors may be very profitable.
