Helgo isn't here, so continuing to talk to myself **
According to the Technor Web site description of "The Cellpoint System" ... Technor's Cellpoint System uses the SIM Toolkit Standard for communication between the User and a number of GSM base stations.
This means that the user's phone must contain a SIM card. Therefore, at this time, the Cellpoint System is restricted to GSM only use. (Only GSM Phones use SIM Cards)
I have been concerned about future third generation Cellular Communications systems which will be based on CDMA technology, and the fact that CDMA phones do NOT currently use SIM Cards.
The previous Sept. 23 news release, and the following Ericsson news release ... Message 11343734 have alleviated my concerns, as they indicate that the 3rd Generation W-CDMA system will also use phones with SIM Cards.
Another Subject .. Cellpoint System vs Time Difference Of Arrival systems (TDOA), by other manufacturers.
It appears that each one these (TDOA systems's) Base Stations must have a direct (antenna) link to a GPS.
This could present a serious problem in underground shopping centers, garages, etc., where a GPS (antenna) link is impossible.
It is in these areas that Cellpoint will continue to function.
Mardy.
Quotes from the Technorinc.com site .....
The system uses SMS messaging for positioning and telematics communication. and
The Cellular Phone - The CellPoint System and AU-System's AviSIM OTA, used in combination with the SIM Toolkit standard for communication between the GSM phone and the SIM card, make it possible for the CellPoint System to position standard GSM phones.
