Unfortunately you seem to be one of those poor souls living under the illusion that our govt cares for us and has our best interest at heart. They do not. The purpose for gun ownership is to maintain the people as the repository of power in this country.Period. It has nothing to do with hunting and only a little to do with self defense in comparison. Ask yourself why Hitler outlawed gun ownership in Nazi Germany. He espoused the same reasons as you, "the safety of the people". We both know how that turned out.
