N.Carolina hog death toll up to 45,500 head - USDA
WASHINGTON, Sept 24 (Reuters) - With nearly half of the counties reporting, a total of 45,500 hogs have been found dead in North Carolina in the wake of Hurricane Floyd, a U.S. Agriculture Department official said Friday.

Officials said the total is expected to change rapidly as more information becomes available.

The department estimates that 283,000 turkeys and 2.2 million chickens drowned after Floyd swept through the state last week.

North Carolina is the second-biggest hog producing state in the nation after Iowa with approximately 9.5 million hogs on farms. Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman said earlier Friday that $5 million was made available to help farmers pay for the disposal of the animal carcasses in North Carolina.
