It took them over 20 years to recover, that is if you count cash value of the Dow. And many many issues dried up and blew away. The Dow of 1949 was not the same Dow as in 1929.
The 1973 peak of the dow wasn't recaptured until 1985 ... stocks can get a long-lasting kick in the teeth.
