Network OS:Why can't we get along?; CTO debate
Computer Reseller News, April 07, 1997

From the article:
To The Editor:The story "VARs Guide NT Migration" (CRN, Jan. 20)
does not reflect the real issues affecting VARs and customers in the great
Novell vs. Microsoft network operating system debate. The article
focuses only on the perceived strengths of Windows NT Server while
ignoring its weaknesses.

For example, customers want a powerful directory service to keep track
of network resources and provide secure authentication. Novell
Directory Services is the best solution for this need; Microsoft's domains
just don't measure up.

Customers want tight integration between their E-mail application and
their network operating system. NT can't provide this; NetWare can.

Customers want the ability to set up a redundant server system. Novell
meets this need with its SFT III product. Microsoft doesn't offer an
equivalent solution.

Novell uses less hardware CPU and memory than NT.

These are three areas where NetWare outshines NT. Certainly, NT has
its benefits as an applications server, but they aren't nearly enough to make a case for replacing Novell. What my customers want are ways to integrate Microsoft and Novell products, not ways to abandon one
vendor in favor of the other.

**Comment** This is a NW customer response, it is good that we have some loyal costumers. But, don't you wonder why Novell PR don't respond to these articles in the first place?

Gang of Four goes after Microsoft
By Dave Kearns
03/31:/97

From the article:
Sun's Java, Oracle's databases, Netscape's Web servers and Novell's
NDS working in unison - it's a formidable lineup.

Each of these products, on its own, is better than the comparable
Microsoft offering - absolutely better or better because of its ability to run across different platforms. But it remains to be seen if this revitalized lineup can stop or even slow Microsoft's seemingly inexorable drive to dominate all facets of computing.

The bet here is that Microsoft is going to have to make some tough
decisions and tighten its focus. Don't be surprised if Microsoft blinks first in the directory services battle.

**Comment** This guy is something else. We need to get him to write on
this thread.

One final thing, to show how little I know, I figured most of the abbreviations, but I still don't know what BTW, <g>, and <G> stand for.
