Y2k Bug Forces Long-Overdue Cleanup Of Computer Systems

SNIP:
>>An opportunity? Money well spent? A $200 million "advantage?" Well, yes, explained Dec and other authorities on the devilish glitch.

While the Year 2000 computer bug is a costly problem causing real pain, and a lingering source of mystery as to what precisely will happen at midnight Jan. 1, it is also a cloud with a silver lining.

That lining is inspiring invention of new diagnostic tools, forcing standards on technology managers and making the world aware of the sweeping role computers play in our lives.

"The issue is that while we think of Y2K as a technical problem, it might more accurately be described as a socio-technical problem," said Leon Kappelman, an author on the topic. "If Y2K hadn't come along, something else would have to point up the frailties in the system." <<

Remember I said this would be a benefit, updating all these old computers to faster computing power able to run high speed Internet connections. It's going to make business more effective and help the Internet grow at a faster pace.
