People have kept guns in their homes since the invention of firearms. They didn't have a problem with this until the 60's when everyone decided it was cool to whine about everything. My handgun has come in handy a few times. Its kept me from being killed, Its kept me from being robbed blind. The problem isn't guns, its the people that the system refuses to punish when they commit crimes. Our judicial system has catered to "crybabies" for too long. If we went back to the old system of real punishment, as well as the old system of child rearing, we wouldn't be talking about this now.
