In an index fund you are partially protected because the S&P adapts to accept the winners and let the losers go. I must admit - I am having too much fun choosing issues and then cheering or cursing them on to adapt a "passive" strategy quite yet. I haven't squarely faced my denial about being able to pick the top or the bottom ... and it doesn't seem to be on my immediate calendar. :-)
