In the area of Central Park South, it is always interesting to peek into the Plaza, and to see the Grand Army Plaza. Across the street is FAO Schwartz, the jolliest toy store this side of Santa's workshop. On the park side, and not very far up, is the Central Park Zoo (which was used in the Schwarzenegger film "Eraser"). It is small, but very attractive....In the southeast corner of Manhattan is the South Street Seaport, which is a good place to relax and eat after touring the financial district (the New York Stock Exchange is well set up for tourists). One also gets a great view of the Brooklyn Bridge from the Seaport....In the northwest corner of Manhattan, past the George Washington Bridge, is the Cloisters, which belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is a reconstructed medieval monastery, with a great view of the Hudson, full of tapestries, statuary, some paintings, some stained glass, and many beautifully decorated chalices, crucifixes, patens, reliquaries, and so forth...It is also interesting to drive past landmarks like Riverside Church, the Jewish Theological Seminary, and Grant's Tomb on the way up... |
