Compaq Hires Flextronics to Build Circuit Boards (Correct)
(Corrects reference to Singapore in 2nd paragraph.)
Houston, Sept. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Compaq Computer Corp. said it awarded a contract to Flextronics International Ltd. to build circuit-board assemblies for some servers made by the world's largest personal-computer maker.
Terms weren't disclosed. The contract calls for Flextronics to build all circuit assemblies for servers using Intel Corp. processors that Compaq currently builds in Singapore.
The agreement is part of Houston-based Compaq's strategy to streamline its supply chain and increase its flexibility in configuring PCs to meet customer demand. Flextronics already builds motherboards, the main slab of circuitry that includes the processor, memory and multimedia chips, for Compaq's commercial desktop machines.
''This represents an expansion of the business they're already doing for us,'' Compaq spokesman Alan Hodel said.
Flextronics, which is based in Singapore, will build the circuit boards in the U.S. and Mexico, Hodel said. |
