KLP, what a great classic post The Truth Of TechNets about how they alone put our country back into Positive Economic Growth Leadership Territory. You're absolutely right.
Those who've invented Technology & Internet are the Renaissance Artists of Our Time "The Information Age". The stats you wonder about re: actual $ and jobs growth could be dug out one by one thru DD online, along with probably a trip to the library to go into the WSJ microfilms and the stacks. If I ever see a single site that gives 'em I'll post it.
Til then, it's easier just to say with assurance how anyone who saw this coming 25 years ago could've used spare change set aside daily along with extra money from birthday gifts & returning pop bottles to invest in fledgling techstocks & Be Way Beyond Set For Life today, dontcha think?
Yes, without Tech, wonder what would've happened to this Country... when all the stuff had already been over-manufactured & sitting on shelves in the days of huge heavy cars using way too much expensive & scarce gasoline, whatta mess. When planned obsolescence was born in the '50's to fill the anticipated gap it still wasn't enough to make it keep rolling on.
I can remember the inflationary recession of the mid-70s where all of a sudden the shrinking job market was flooded with soldiers returning amid other members of the biggest generation ever in the history of this nation entering the career workforce all at the same time. It meant suddenly 1 1/2 jobs (even crummy jobs weren't so easily available as before and paid less) were needed to double income just to support the same simple lifestyle which just so recently a part-time job had given enough to fund. Knew many women with little children who had to leave 'em in childcare and go to work even though their husbands had decent jobs... not from boredom or self-fulfillment but from Pure Need. That this was blamed on "womens libbers" and "spoiled extravagance" added insult to injury when The Truth of the last-ditch effort accompanied by some bad propaganda and exploitation was so obvious. So The Companies got their "2 for the price of 1" workers out of our generation... what a shock that was for so many young working families of that time who'd been raised in a middle-class home in the '50's with Mom at home and a Dad who didn't even have as good a job as his son but had managed to be sole support of his family. So many shocks from the losses of and following Vietnam tore at Families. Amid the high divorce & crime & substance addiction rates of that time, media blamed it all on "hedonism selfishness & godlessness" while joblessness & stresses of coping with man/woman parent/child role models ground asunder & sacred authority figures exposing feet of clay were never mentioned. Those bad economic times contributed the social disorders of those years.
Yep, then Tech came along, and so America started to Climb Out Of The Hole and Still Climbing. We should be thanking those who worked & busted their brains so hard - as it turns out their inventions were the vehicle needed to pull that train of ours back to roaring on its track again.
We who like to invest in the good technet stuff, Of Course we'll be rewarded. Still Plenty Room To Grow from here.
Happy you're better from the flu, KLP. You sure came roaring back, too!
909s,
Joanie
