Way off topic.
I vaguely recall coming across a sound bite or an advert last night on one of the cable channels that dealt with a web site which featured a phone booth. Could this be the same phone booth you are referring to?
The theme behind this shoot was that one could register (or something like that) to be a candidate to go out to where this phone booth was, and answer it. It would ring from time to time, and the culmination of the experience was to say hello. Maybe I'm reading too much into this from my vague recollection, while I was arm-wrestling with Windows 98 at the time.
In an earlier time, the thing to do was to see how many people, usually drunken college students, could fit into one of these things when they were actual enclosures: "a booth." Then along came the VW Bugs.
Today's payphone stands have been relegated to bird perches. So much for the idea of privacy and the joys of perspiration, and a place to sneak a whatever.
Getting back to the cable spot, people were reportedly coming in from all corners of Earth to answer this pay phone. What is most enlightening in an amusing way about this entire venture is that various individuals either spent a lot of money, or received same, to shoot, and then present, this thing. And it got national air, er... cable time. Yes, there could be something to the notion that bandwidth is getting more plentiful and cheaper.
