Richard,

Article from PC World says Dell and CPQ received calls from Intel claiming they were having problems with their 820 chipset.

The following is cut from the above article:

Intel reportedly found a "memory bit error" that curtails top memory capacity and speed.
...
Glaskowsky says 820 problems center around a third Rambus memory slot on motherboards originally intended to boost performance of the chipset. According to Glaskowsky, Intel discovered the third slot generates memory errors--and motherboards with three slots will have to be scrapped

Perhaps there is a chip addressing problem in the i820 Rambus controller logic which is only evident when high chip (or logical) addresses are accessed? The reference to speed seems only to relate to the 3rd slot being there to improve performance by providing more memory (even though we know it doesn't at present).

If so, several workarounds are possible:

1) Prevent the 3rd slot from being used by fixing the continuity module in place.

2) Modify the BIOS so that even if a 3rd RIMM is inserted the system will never access it.

3) Possibly the BIOS could be modified to remove a restricted range of addresses that are affected by the problem.

Any thoughts?

John
