The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Sept. 24, edition that vehicle sales in the United States this year will shatter the 1986 record of 16 million units before falling back slightly in 2000, forecasters said yesterday. The Globe's Greg Keenan writes that the most bullish outlook for the end-of-the-year figures came from Van Bussman, chief economist for DaimlerChrysler, who predicted U.S. sales of 16.7 million cars, trucks, minivans and sport utility vehicles this year and between 15.5 and 16 million next year. Joshua Mendelsohn, chief economist for Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, was only slightly less optimistic than Mr. Bussman. Mr. Mendelsohn's call is for U.S. sales of 16.5 million this year and 15.5 million next year. He added a Canadian prediction of 1.4 million next year, slightly less than this year's figure of a little less than 1.5 million. However next year's expected decline should cause no worries, both economist said. Mr. Bussman said the DaimlerChrysler labour settlement should have little impact on vehicle prices.
