FYI: an explaination like this helps to make things clear for the non-tech. types, but it might be helpful to point out that I don't believe the smearing is "equal" for a given interferring pulse. For a given interferring pulse, the smearing probably looks more like a "sinc" function = sin( x ) / x, where x = 2 * pi * delta_frequency. However, different pulses at different center frequencies get smeared like this too, so if the pulses are randomly generated with a uniform probability distribution, then the "net smearing" might be more "equal".
