Backup partition ...

You're correct about a backup partition being inadequate protection, since with a hard disk failure your backup is lost too. I should've pointed that out, but forgot.

I backup my system to Zip disks. If I was starting over, I'd take a serious look at burning CDs. The poster I was responding to said some of the work being contemplated was to burn CDs, so I assumed backups would be part of the plan.

My experience, however limited, is that I've never had a hard disk failure, but I've had plenty of software messes. I attempt to match my precautions to my risks. I have my system on Zip disks, but they're a little stale; I have my working data on Zip disks which are up to date; and I have my system copied to an image on another partition. I can recover from a software problem in a few minutes and a hardware problem in a few hours. This sure beats a few days to never for recovering a system having never been backed up.

Again, thank-you for pointing out that a backup partition offers no protection against hard disk failure. This is an important piece of the puzzle.

Cheers, PW.
