I had trouble with interference when I first started using powered speakers. I don't know if I had the same scratchiness you're talking about. If you have some non-powered speakers sitting around you might see what happens using them instead.

OTOH, it's fun to blow away your OS and start from scratch. I used to spend my life doing it.
