RE: <Is anyone aware of a public statement made by a senior Rambus exec which denies having a major problem with the Camino chipset? I believe Tupriani (? spelling) from Rambus came out after the close Friday.>

Yes, try this: mercurycenter.com
"The only advantage that three memory sockets offered users was greater flexibility to add memory, said Rambus' vice president of the logic products division, Subodh Toprani.

''In most configurations, even systems with three slots work fine, but in some oddball configurations, problems occurred,'' he said.
"

Unfortunately I guess Dell is using an oddball configuration. I wonder how they felt when they heard what Toprani said?

RE: <These problems would be almost be imperceptible to the Windows PC user.>

I guess you're saying that Windows is so unreliable that who would even notice a few more errors cause by the memory.

RE: <If these problems needed to be corrected they could easily be corrected with a software fix....no scrapping of chipsets/motherboards.>

I think you're dreaming here.

Toprani also said: "''These problems aren't any different than what you see with every new memory type that's been introduced,'' Toprani noted. ''We have three memory speeds at 600, 700 and 800 MHz. I haven't heard of any other memory that runs faster than 133 MHz. Anybody else who enters this market is going to have the same problems that we are already solving.''"

I think that anyone else would know enough to support the 64 bit data bus directly rather than muxing down to a 16 bit interface and then demuxing it back.
