Hi KZNerd; That $8 per chip pricing is their standard budgetary quote for quantity 1000. They stuck it in an advertisement, so it is obviously their dream price, nobody will pay more, except in smaller quantity. I am sure that if I called them up and ordered a sh:$-load, they would give them to me for around $5 or $6, with declines in price guaranteed into the future.
The parts are so stable to make, that there just isn't any reason to charge a lot for them.
I'm going to have to look for some links that show how the pins per package problem has been alleviated recently. I can show links to 1600 pin gate arrays, but I don't have ready pricing for chips in big packages. I could call up sales guy and ask for a budgetary quote, but this would require either obviously wasting his time, or me lying to him, and I just don't have the heart to do it. Plus, I'd prefer to surf, as you have the added advantage of being able to drag back a link.

P.S. I had a thought. We really should have known that the Rambus ship had sprung a serious leak when the pricing on RDRAM dropped below that of SDRAM. That probably was caused by serious cancellations on the part of the box makers. |
