David,

Had a great day up in the Gatineaus. It was beautiful up there... nice clear sky and just about perfect hiking temperature.

We drove up to Lac Philippe and hiked in to the Lusk Caves. Met quite a number of people hiking on the main trail which is around 3 km. long. Have you ever been inside the caves? Very nice sculpted appearance to them from the glacial "rivers" that wore through the limestone to create them. There are a few open sky areas in the cave which make it easy to see inside the end of the cave which is on the highest ground. There is a stream running through the cave...shallow at the high end and about a half metre or more in spots at the lower end. The water was cold today, and the air cool, so I just went in as far as the section where the ceiling of the cave drops down and the water gets past ankle deep. Some much younger folks went right through and emerged "shrieking" from the cold water at the exit end... Made me glad that I decided not to go through today... (-:

We decided to return to the parking area through the forest instead of by the trail along the lake. On the forest trail, which is about 4.0 km., we only met 2 other people. It crosses over a "hill" so there is a bit of climbing, but nothing too steep. Lots of beech, maple and oak up there. As we were descending from the high ground of the trail, we came upon a pair of White-tailed deer (a doe and its fawn) at the side of the trail. They were relatively unafraid and I was able to take 3 photos of them before they moved on into denser forest.

All in all it was a good hike. The leaves still aren't quite at peak colour yet.... think they will be by next weekend though. Don't know where we'll be for that. Maybe go canoeing up on the Tay near Perth.

Later,
Croc
