Betty,

According to this news release from last April, 75% of the CF production is being done in China

Production in this instance may refer to outsourced assembly, rather than wafer manufacture. I would guess that SNDK might invest in a fab in the area serviced by Celestica, but have no knowledge as to the local expertise in that region for cutting edge semiconductor design.

The UMC site list several fabs about to go on line in late 1999 and early 2000. Perhaps SanDisk has thought of increasing its investment in UMC with the upcoming consolidation there.

On the other hand they may be looking at other sites outside Taiwan in order to reduce their exposure to things such as the current disaster.

I suspect this will all be clear at the time of the next c.c.
I would not underestimate Eli's foresight or the guidance of his team.

BTW, I am still bullish about an overwhelmingly successful Q3.

(I bought 4 high capacity cards myself during Q3.)
