First off, in the patent community, it is well known that about 1 out of 100 patents is "worth" something. Another 15 out of 100 prevent competitors from developing similiar methods. The rest, well, they are worthless.

Next, a patent is just, well, a piece of paper. Entities can get patents on similiar technologies or fields of endeavor. Remember, ther are many ways from point A to point B, the easiest being a straigh line... :-)
