ICGE/VERT type operations will build community from bottomup (right now they are pretty choosy on what vertal they will invest in), subscribers (say plastics industry participants) will sign on to our hypothetical plastic community before signing on to any GE-Plastics operated community as they would be terrified of being held hostage by GE in information and transaction. Same logic, folks will sign on to PC-Component.com before forming community on Dell operated vertical portal. Dell would have to be a subscriber of any PC industry vertical portal, as would GE plastics in plastics industry vertical portal - if GE doesn't, GE will lose but not before the GE guy who decided not to subscribe loses his job first.

The CMGI created businesses or the Amazon.com will face other competitors due to low barrier to easy entry (the competitors do not have to win or even stay in business in order for CMGI to lose in the death of 1000 cuts from every Tom, Dick and Harry with a bright idea, just as www.bn.com took business away from Amazon.com by simply being in existence) from the cyber world, and soon from the real world (www.walmart.com).
